![]() The U.S. unemployment rate rose half a point from last month to 5.5. The May 2008 statistics marks the biggest unemployment increase during the Bush Administration, the sharpest since 1986 when it rose from 6.7 in January to 7.2 in February. Regarding the increase, the Bush Administration's Secretary of Labor Elaine Chao said, "Today's increase in the unemployment rate reflects the fact that unusually large numbers of students and graduates are entering the labor market."
