The Senate is scheduled to vote on the motion to invoke cloture on S.A.4825 the substitute amendment to the Climate Security Act of 2008, more commonly referred to as the Climate Bill. The bill's co-sponsors don't expect to have the 60 votes needed to end cloture and move the bill to a floor vote. During the debate, a group of Republican Senators requested that the clerk read the 492 page bill out loud, which took 10 over hours. The main goal of the bill was to establish a cap and trade model similar to the one adopted by California in 2006. The hope was that it would motivate industries to reduce greenhouse emission. Critics of the bill argue that the bill was rushed through without allowing amendments to be offered. Many Republicans also argue that the bill would result in higher gas and energy prices for Americans. It is possible that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid may withdraw the bill tomorrow instead of putting it up for the vote on cloture. Both Senator Obama and Senator McCain endorsed the cap and trade system, but neither was present for the debate on the bill and neither is expected to be present for the vote (that may or may not happen) tomorrow.
